Welcome to 2008-2009 Season

It is with great pleasure I welcome both existing and new players, and their families, to the 2008/09 season as new Chair of The Towcestrians RFC Mini and Juniors Section.  I am hoping we are able to add to the successes achieved last season when we saw more players form the section than ever representing the East Midlands, Saints Academy and The Alliance.  Congratulations to all who reached representative rugby and to all the teams, their players and coaches that achieved such great results through out all age groups.  TRFC - mascot

My objectives for this season do not, however, focus purely on our representative players but on development of the section, its infra structure, coaching staff and players of all abilities.  I take over this position from Liz Capurro who leaves the section in rude health, thanks to her hard work the club has continued to thrive in recent years and we thank her for everything she has done.

This year is the 75th anniversary of rugby been played at Towcestrians and as such is being marked with a number of initiatives.  Friday 26th September sees a celebratory dinner in a marquee at the club, with guest speaker David Duckham.  Tickets are available through John Woolley see details displayed in the club.  To mark the anniversary in our section we will be issuing each paid up player with a Towcestrians rugby ball early in October.

Subject to popular demand the kit shop will this year include a much broader range of kit and equipment, having been taken on by Arnie Bennett.  He will be opening on Mondays Thursday evenings plus Saturday and Sunday lunch times so please support the club when kitting yourselves out for the season.

The season also brings with it some changes in the laws which coaches and referees will be getting their heads around and briefing in during the training sessions.  Junior age groups will also see the introduction of the Youth Structured Season which requires tighter recording of players’ training and playing time.  All this adds to the administration of running an age group and I thank in advance all the managers and coaches for their continued efforts.

We continue to face several challenges in our ever growing club.  The facilities in the clubhouse are stretched to capacity. However, planning is underway with the Towcestrians General Committee to develop the building providing more room and an up date of facilities.  We hope to be able to present plans towards the end of the year.

Much work and cash has been put into improving the pitches in particular the drainage. Tony Bates from our section has been newly appointed as Consultant Head Groundsman adding his considerable expertise to the staff.  Tony is committed to maintaining the pitches to the best standard throughout the season.  We will of course suffer periods of extreme conditions and heavy wear so your continued patience is much appreciated if the weather thwarts his efforts in the deep mid winter.

Some will have heard of proposals to extend the playing area to the east of our pitches.  Procedures are well underway but currently being held up with the solicitors who are dealing with a restrictive covenant on the land.  We hope to be able to report positive developments with this soon.  Needless to say, if successful, this will hugely benefit the section by significantly increasing the space on which we have to play rugby.

The section continues to thrive by means of its volunteers.  We benefit from some extremely committed people who help to keep things running throughout the season, but we still need more support as some people move on.  We are currently short of people in key positions, in particular the Section Secretary, and some additional kitchen co-ordinators to replace those stepping down next season.  There are also numerous smaller roles that would suit people who are able to commit lesser amounts of time. If you would like to help out and can spare a little time each week I would be pleased to hear from you, the reward does come in seeing a thriving club with 350+ children enjoying their rugby both on and off the pitch.  Details of some of the roles we are short of are in the Website on www.towsrus.org

Finally as we now enter a new season, I wish all players, volunteers and parents a hugely enjoyable and successful year and look forward to meeting you all on Sunday mornings, starting from the 7th September.

Yours Sincerely

Mark Austin
